People go through such a variety of hardships. Another TA at the Chinese International School, Katrina, hasn’t seen her mother in 8 years (she is just slightly younger than me). Her mom is working in NY as a tutor, and has to stay in the US because she is waiting to get her citizenship. Katrina gets to visit her for a week in December.
